Just to make sure everything is working. If you can see and hear me, go ahead and pop your name into the chat. Hey, Megan? From Tampa. 2 00:00:22.200 --> 00:00:23.669 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Good to see you. 3 00:00:24.520 --> 00:00:27.809 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Hi! Jennifer! Jennifer's coming to us from California. 4 00:00:29.980 --> 00:00:34.540 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Idaho, Missouri, Wisconsin, North Carolina. Hi, Linda! Good to see you. 5 00:00:34.810 --> 00:00:37.760 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: North Carolina, another North Carolina, Toronto. 6 00:00:40.700 --> 00:01:05.699 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Netherlands, Iowa. Amazing! Alright! Oh, yes, this is actually dog, not cat. This is Knox. Hopefully he will. Oh, he's sneezing behind me, very excited to be writing about fantasy here. And hopefully he'll be quiet. Yesterday he was being oh, I guess he's decided to roll around. He's just so excited he can't contain himself. But hopefully he'll be fairly quiet throughout the session. 7 00:01:06.013 --> 00:01:19.826 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Anyway, it is so great to see all of you here today. I'm glad you found links and we're able to make it in to the session today. I am just gonna go through a bit of housekeeping before we get started today. 8 00:01:20.150 --> 00:01:37.060 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: So, as you all know, today is the last day of fantasy writers week, the last live day we will be adding all of the replays to this session to the premium hub. But then all replays from the week are going to go into the community. I'm going to add the link to the event recordings into the chat. Now. 9 00:01:37.060 --> 00:01:58.879 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: the event recording space in the community has is going to have both recordings from fantasy writers week but then it's also going to have recordings from all of the all of the other sessions that have existed forever. So we've been doing fantasy writers week for years and years and years. At this point. So there are historical fantasy writers, week recordings in there. There's recordings from our most recent 10 00:01:59.140 --> 00:02:08.259 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: romance writers week. So please check that out. There's, I think, over 300 h of video in there that's really, really useful. So that way, you can access all of the recordings ongoing. 11 00:02:08.735 --> 00:02:37.700 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Now, the other thing that would be really great. I'm gonna put another link into the chat. Is to complete a survey about this event. It is really really helpful for us to have great you know, to have your feedback. That helps us continue to do these events and continue to show to the you know the powers that be here at the company, that these events are useful for all of you. And something that you know you want to continue to engage with. Anything that you could put in to talk about, what you've learned again how it helps. 12 00:02:37.700 --> 00:02:52.570 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: you know, influence your relationship with providing aid for the positive or for the negative. Again, that's really helpful for us to know. So we can continue to we can continue to apply that feedback and then again share with the with the leadership team so that we can keep bringing these events to you. 13 00:02:52.760 --> 00:03:02.789 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: and coffee cools. Don't worry. I was just mentioning that in the video library in the community there are recordings from all of our previous events, including previous romance weeks and things like that. 14 00:03:03.504 --> 00:03:26.109 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, I think that is all of the housekeeping. Again, really, really appreciate. If you're able to fill out the survey. It's fairly quick. And then let me see, we are, I guess, ready to begin now. Today's session is going to be very, very interactive. So we're going to work through a number of a number of prompts on 15 00:03:26.230 --> 00:03:51.219 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: world building. And these are going to be progressively, progressively, more complicated and progressively more difficult. And they're, I guess, also just kind of things that you can do to think about how to improve your fantasy novel, and how to really deepen it beyond the kind of surface level thoughts about. You know the world and what it looks like. So we're going to be going through a number for prompts. Now, as we go through these prompts, I'm going to be invited 16 00:03:51.220 --> 00:04:11.689 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: you to share in the chat. You are more than welcome to share in the chat. If you have something that you are interested in and want to share with a larger group. But if it's something that you want to keep to yourself, that's totally fine. Sharing is up to you. You're welcome to write, you know, by hand. You're welcome to write in the chat. You're welcome to write on the computer. But hopefully the prompts today will help you think about how to 17 00:04:11.990 --> 00:04:20.759 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: You know how to just deepen your fantasy world and think about some of the really, really fun things that you can do to make that world feel more lived in and real. 18 00:04:20.769 --> 00:04:41.039 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: So let me share my screen. We're gonna talk through just a couple of quick, fantasy worlds first, and then we're gonna get into the writing. Alright, let's go through it. So for those of you who I have not met yet. My name is Hayley. I am the director of community here at providing aid. My job is to put on these events. So I'm just so thrilled to be here with you today. 19 00:04:41.852 --> 00:04:46.319 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: And let's keep going. So let's talk about what world building is. 20 00:04:46.610 --> 00:05:08.400 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: So world building is basically the idea of creating a living, breathing environment for your story that's going to feel as real as the worlds that we actually live in. And so I'd just love to hear in the chat what are some of your favorite fantasy worlds. I think one of the things that attracts us all to fantasy is that world, that kind of escapism. So what are some of everyone's favorite fantasy worlds. 21 00:05:08.890 --> 00:05:11.880 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: And also I'd love to know, too. What do you like about them? 22 00:05:15.340 --> 00:05:19.210 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Yeah, Lord of the rings. Middle Earth is great secret histories is great. 23 00:05:20.970 --> 00:05:27.840 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Yeah, the world of Harry Potter obviously is a huge one. Harry Potter is, I think, a great example of a world that 24 00:05:28.020 --> 00:05:33.590 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: hasn't come into reality. In some ways it's kind of like broken the fourth wall since there are. 25 00:05:33.930 --> 00:05:35.070 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: I 26 00:05:35.110 --> 00:05:57.659 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: you know, theme parks and things where you can kind of go live out. Harry Potter. World dune yeah. Darker shoes. Magic the Showab is so amazing. We interviewed her for the first the first fantasy writers, week hot elves and Lord of the Rings. Yes, it'd be great to have hot elves in the whole. In the real world, magic systems, guardians of the flame. 27 00:05:58.383 --> 00:06:05.470 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: I'd love to also hear a second a second thought on in the world that you like. 28 00:06:06.060 --> 00:06:31.969 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: What are some of the things that make them feel real. So I feel like dune is a great example and maybe I'll just talk about the most recent dune film. I think one of the things that was so great about the most recent dune film was all of the like small detail. Exactly as you're saying, Mary all the small details. There's that like one scene in the new dune film where they, Thearkon, harken's like. Take off as they're hunting 29 00:06:31.970 --> 00:06:49.850 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: some of the people on a rackus, and they just like it's not a big scene. But you can just kind of see, really, like all of the various technology and how it's different from people to people in that. So it's just yeah. It's really interesting. So political drama, people have one special gift. They're insant. They're not overpowered. 30 00:06:51.540 --> 00:06:55.739 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: yeah, what are some of the other things that we'd like about it? And what makes it feel feel real? 31 00:06:58.460 --> 00:07:00.190 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Let's see. 32 00:07:02.480 --> 00:07:05.199 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: characters behave in understandable ways. 33 00:07:05.470 --> 00:07:09.763 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Different ecosystem. Yeah. Visuals yalamed. I'm curious for 34 00:07:10.630 --> 00:07:22.829 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: for the different eco, or for like the visuals. What are you looking for? What are you. Yeah, what are you thinking for that? How do you kind of see that in in text? If that makes sense 35 00:07:23.561 --> 00:07:37.140 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: shrek was fun, the same things they had. Yeah, exactly. That's oh, so it's how you see the meal that makes sense. Yeah, so shrek is a great example of like they have things that are in our world. But they're not actually 36 00:07:37.370 --> 00:07:47.680 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: like there. This is a twist on that kind of real thing closing in textures. The opening of the wardrobe from when he is the house to the New Root World. Yep! In line which the world drove 37 00:07:47.710 --> 00:08:04.259 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: blade runner and cyber punk. You can buy. The design you want makes for interesting trade offs and humanity characters take the world seriously. Yes, I think that's characters taking the world seriously, is such an important piece. I think one of the things that we want to think about is that our world should have 38 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:26.519 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: should have engaging pieces that have rules and real real real consequences for the characters to find them. So basically, all of this to say, when your world is believable and multi-layered. Your readers are going to sink into it. If particularly in fantasy. And sci fi! If you haven't paid enough attention to the world building, it's going to feel. 39 00:08:26.660 --> 00:08:29.450 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: not real. It's going to feel kind of false. 40 00:08:29.820 --> 00:08:38.020 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: I think a really good example of this, for instance, is is when there are kind of anachronisms in terms of language. So 41 00:08:38.200 --> 00:08:54.589 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: I okay, I don't know if anyone else here is a Taylor Swift care Taylor Swift fan. But Taylor Swift recently released a new album, and one of the songs is called Down Bad, which is like very slang right now, for when you're kind of in love with someone and really don't. You know, you're you're down bad for them, right? 42 00:08:54.590 --> 00:09:18.050 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: That is a very of our time and of our moment phrasing it wouldn't make, wouldn't make sense to have that in a fantasy novel. But often oftentimes language and acronyms like that can creep into fantasy. Novels just by accident, right? And that will not only just kind of take people out if they're not sure what it means. But it'll also kind of take you out and make you think. Oh, you know 43 00:09:18.050 --> 00:09:34.264 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: I I didn't really that. That isn't that what I say? That doesn't make that doesn't really make a lot of sense, and it kind of takes you out of the it takes you out of the the logic of that world and the kind of escapism of that world. So it's really important to kind of think about that. 44 00:09:34.550 --> 00:09:47.400 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: you know, when you're designing this world. How are you going to make sure that you're creating a world that has its own kind of own rules and own systems, so that you know you're not taking people out of that at that time. 45 00:09:48.151 --> 00:09:52.369 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, let's get into looking at some of these worlds. 46 00:09:53.400 --> 00:10:10.909 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: So a good example of a world that someone already brought in up in the chat was Narnia. So Narnia is a really great example of where you're kind of literally crossing over from our real world into this fantasy world. Narnia is a place where magic meets reality, where you know. 47 00:10:10.910 --> 00:10:35.850 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: young and old, are kind of drawn into this escapism. There one of the things that's, I think, really interesting about Narnia is the idea that this world has kind of a moral theme, I think, for better and worse people in, you know, some of the characters are allowed to access or not allowed to access Narnia based on their actions in the real world there's a kind of controversy over Susan in the last in the last Narnia book of not being able to access. 48 00:10:35.850 --> 00:10:37.629 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Kind of access that 49 00:10:37.860 --> 00:11:07.449 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: because you know, because she's no longer a friend of Narnia. She's doing things that have taken her away from that kind of moral code of the world. And so if for Narnia, having that kind of moral code, are overarching, whether that's in, you know the characters of someone like Aslan, who, or character like Aslan, who kind of stands in as the God figure or you know, whatever else is kind of happening within the world. That type of that type of kind of moral code overarches the entire story and helps again think through 50 00:11:07.480 --> 00:11:13.260 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: who you know, how are characters supposed to behave in this, in this in this setting. 51 00:11:13.741 --> 00:11:25.389 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Let's go into another world. So another example of a great fantasy world is Westeros. It's another world that almost in a different way kind of has a lack of moral code. Westeros is very. You know. There are 52 00:11:25.630 --> 00:11:33.098 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: characters and kind of conflicts that are breaking it. It doesn't have the same strict moral rules that Narnia does. But that kind of 53 00:11:33.630 --> 00:11:36.970 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: that that you know. 54 00:11:37.430 --> 00:12:01.820 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Absence of moral code creates the creates the kind of feeling in history that you, you know that you are there in this kind of dangerous world, as Sherry is saying, Yeah, you love it, but you don't want to visit. Exactly, John. It's the anti-narnea, but it has this kind of really sprawling feel to it. It feels like a place that you can continue to explore. You kind of have the sense of Westeros itself, but then you also have the sense of all of the lands around it. 55 00:12:01.820 --> 00:12:24.122 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: It's also a text that's really, really rife with history. So history of each of the families and each of their legacies plays really deeply into the conflict in present day that we see in a song of fire and ice, we see characters harkening back to the kind of historical texts within their world, and that's informing how they're acting or things like that. At this point. 56 00:12:24.730 --> 00:12:37.232 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: it also is drawing heavily on historical inspiration. For kind of how to how to build out that world and make it feel really real. A lot of people suggest that George RR. Martin took 57 00:12:37.720 --> 00:13:04.214 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: took inspiration from the War of the roses, and that is, you know, an example of again finding real world inspiration, and then turning that in to inspiration for the world itself. So one of the things that you can think about as you're creating. As you are creating your own world is, are there places, you know? Are there worlds that I can take advantage or ex existence in. You know our world that I can take 58 00:13:04.560 --> 00:13:20.700 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: I can take advantage of, and then adapt for our own world. Another very similar a very similar work is kind of Babel by Rf. Quong. That is a world that a fantasy kind of retelling of of nineteenth century Oxford. And it's really finding it's 59 00:13:20.700 --> 00:13:45.630 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: very, very kind of closely aligned to that real world. Historical experience, just adding magic as a layer on top of that, so you can kind of do both. George R. Martin here has taken historical influence and used Westeros kind of created his own Third Third world that's different from ours third party worlds, whereas Rf. Quong has interplayed magic over the existence of our our kind of real world 60 00:13:45.630 --> 00:13:48.968 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: and real history. So either way, you can take 61 00:13:49.370 --> 00:13:56.350 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: you can take inspiration from periods of history and apply that Rf. Quong in Babel again, is kind of 62 00:13:56.800 --> 00:14:20.080 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: doing a twist upon something that exists in our real life. But then, in her other books, The Poppy Wars, she's drawing very, you know significantly from Chinese history, but putting it into a different world, a different world altogether. So again, history is a really great place to think about. You know, how can I draw inspiration? For you know how people are interacting with the world? And how I can kind of bring that to life in my own 63 00:14:21.251 --> 00:14:45.879 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: and I also want to. You know, highlight, that fantasy fantasy worlds do not have to be historical in nature. A really good example of this is Linatian. From Sarah J. Mouse's newest series, her newest series, Crescent City takes place. It's fantasy, but it takes place in a much more futuristic world. So there are kind of Fay. And you know, angels and all of these magical creatures. But they're in a very modern 64 00:14:45.880 --> 00:14:50.738 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: world. They use technology. They use guns and have different 65 00:14:51.210 --> 00:15:14.049 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: different types of weapons. It still leans a bit more fantasy than sci-fi, because they're not doing a lot of the kind of like technical spaceship flying. But yeah, it's a bit more kind of cyberpunk. It's leaning in into the kind of cyber punk and fantasy genres. Excuse me, cyber punk and sci fi without being fully in that, because, again, a lot of the kind of creatures and themes are very traditionally fantasy. 66 00:15:14.616 --> 00:15:25.790 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: but it's a bit more modern. And it's kind of thinking through. How would you apply this? You know, to our modern world. I think, very similarly to how Harry Potter interacts with a modern world, right? It's interacting with, you know. 67 00:15:25.790 --> 00:15:31.480 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: the the characters in that kind of separate out from the modern world, but they still are in that modern world. 68 00:15:32.655 --> 00:15:46.049 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay. So all of this to say, there are so many different things that you could think about. When you're trying to create your world. And all of the examples that we've looked at today have varying layers of ways. That they are kind of 69 00:15:46.050 --> 00:16:10.899 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: bringing in that world. And making that world feel very real. So we start with Narnia. Narnia has that really strong moral code, and that moral compass that's very aligned to the kind of battles for good and evil, and plants the characters firmly on the side of the good the protagonist that we're following are firmly on the side of the good, and that kind of moral code seeps into absolutely everything that's happening in Narnia, and how the characters are interacting 70 00:16:10.900 --> 00:16:14.269 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: with the world, and the characters within that world are very. 71 00:16:14.350 --> 00:16:38.970 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: very kind of specifically aligned on the the good side or the bad side, because the moral code is encompassing of everything in Westeros. It's drawing extremely from kind of historical inspiration. It does not have a moral code, but that history of the world is really informing the present. So everything that's happening within the present day narrative of the song and fire and ice is really related to history that does not play out on the page. 72 00:16:39.050 --> 00:16:49.509 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: But really, again, kind of informs every single thing that's happening. And then there are, as we say with Lynnathi, and there are not things that you you do not always need to be in kind of us, you know. 73 00:16:49.530 --> 00:16:59.429 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: sword, slinging, environment, or things like that. You can have modern weapons. And you can have characters interacting with with modernity in different ways as well. 74 00:17:00.703 --> 00:17:09.199 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay. So the prompts today, as we get into this part of the session are designed to help you think through all of these ways that you can kind of 75 00:17:10.010 --> 00:17:32.700 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: add texture to your world, so to speak, so not just to think, oh, you know, this is this place. It has this many people and this things. But really to think about what are the added layers? What is the language? What's the history? What's the etc, that you need to kind of have to have that kind of textual feeling of this is a different place. This is an escapist place that has its own logic, its own rules, its own sense of how it exists. 76 00:17:33.290 --> 00:17:57.199 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: So the first thing we're gonna do is just warm up. This warm up exercise is to describe your novel and novels. World in 50 words or less. This exercise is designed to thank you to get you thinking about world building and just get warmed up as we go into our next set of exercises. So we'll have 5 min for this. As I mentioned, you are welcome to put it into the chat, and then we will read through some of them once they're done. 77 00:17:58.426 --> 00:18:02.960 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: And yes, you can pick one work in progress, so you can go through several. Alright. 5 min starts now. 78 00:18:36.060 --> 00:18:51.240 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: and if you're just getting in no worries, we just started our very first sprint. Our very first sprint is on the on the page. It is to describe your novel in novels, world, and 50 words or less. So you've got about 4 min left. We just started. We had 5 min total. 79 00:23:01.570 --> 00:23:07.709 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, that is our first sprint. So let's look at some of the worlds we have created. 80 00:23:07.750 --> 00:23:09.400 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: And so 81 00:23:10.320 --> 00:23:11.130 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: oh, but 82 00:23:11.140 --> 00:23:35.709 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: data, Jess says my world is about 2 natural lovers turned enemies in a magical society who learn to love each other again after learning to forgive themselves. The girl despises the boy the because of misplace grief. The boy despised the girl because of misplaced guilt. Sounds like a really amazing story premise, Jess. I I think as we start to get into this. We're gonna detail out that setting a little bit more and think through what are the kind of rules and and thoughts in that 83 00:23:35.968 --> 00:23:46.580 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: in that setting that's that are going to interplay in this kind of struggle for them to get to know each other and struggle for them, to love each other or to come together, or be kind of drawn apart. 84 00:23:46.973 --> 00:24:11.400 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Let's see, Juliana says it's 1,500. Europe ghosts are real, and astrology is accurate. Oh, exciting! The Tenth Crusade has been cut short, thanks to the arrival of God's executioners, the 4 horsemen, the last remaining kingdom, Bavaria is protected by a massive salt filled circular scent trench, but every storm threatens to break its wind. Interesting! Alright! Let's see. 85 00:24:11.690 --> 00:24:23.329 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Megan says my world feels like our worlds, but with magic instead of technology being the driving force. So it's more of the medieval leading away from the kind of medieval vibe of most fantasies 86 00:24:23.959 --> 00:24:35.150 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: creatures in this world are a hybrid of known creatures in our world. There's a magic system where Majes are the highest and Regs are the lowest, very interesting. Let's see. 87 00:24:35.150 --> 00:25:00.270 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: we've got. John's got a medieval fantasy world divided into 2 separate cultures, the world above, which is similar to medieval Europe. Though with fantasy races like humans and elves. And then there's a world below. There's a kind of hollow earth setting, where dark elves and goblins live. All have different cultures, but are ruled by the 7 Towers, ancient artifacts left from a long dead race of gods. This is a really great example of what we were talking about with 88 00:25:00.900 --> 00:25:23.050 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: with the kind of history playing into the the present right. So these out, these towers that were left in a a long, long time ago are are, you know, playing into kind of how the world is. Is existing today. Okay, these are great. Just like Sherry, saying I would read all of these as well. Let's get on to our second prompt 89 00:25:23.150 --> 00:25:47.669 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: alright. So if you're just joining us, no worries at all. We are going to just be working through kind of progressive prompts we've just started. So you haven't missed very much. So our second prompt is to write down 5 rules for your world. These rules can relate to any part of your world, and I want you to think big here. But you could also actually think too too small. So an example of this could be. 90 00:25:48.423 --> 00:26:11.756 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Let's think in kind of slytherin right like in Harry Potter in slytherin characters, you know, in slytherin tend to be more ambitious. And you know a lot of dark wizards kind of come out of that house right? So that's kind of a rule that characters from that house come out of that. Another good example from Harry Potter is that the magical world is kept separate from the muggle, the real world. 91 00:26:12.420 --> 00:26:30.835 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: and and and they're trying to kind of uphold that that separation and upholding that separation creates a lot of conflict for the characters within the within the world. Right? They're always trying to stay away from muggles. I think what's right and wrong. We talked about Westeros earlier so, and 92 00:26:31.170 --> 00:26:55.651 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: westeros they have. The kind of might is right. You know, that somebody shared in the chat earlier. That that thought, that again, who is strongest, is the one who will wields the throne. There can also be rules around who gets magic, who you know how magic is used, etc. But we're gonna go with 5 rules that you can access and I will put the prompt in the chat, and then you'll have the slides after this so that you can 93 00:26:56.207 --> 00:26:58.149 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: You can see them after you're done. 94 00:26:59.090 --> 00:27:05.869 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Let's get started. We've got 5 min. The prompt is there in the chat, and then, as oops 95 00:27:06.170 --> 00:27:32.850 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: not going too ahead as as you're done with your W. Rules, you can paste them in the chat as people have begun to be. Think about. And again, these can be very, very big, but they can also be kind of mundane they could be like, you know, full moon ceremonies. Everybody stays home, or, you know, forks always have to go on the left side instead of the right, or something like that, just those kind of little details that really make the world feel more real that those kind of idiosyncrasies. Alright, 5 min begins now. 96 00:31:25.020 --> 00:31:26.909 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, we have about 1 min left. 97 00:32:36.460 --> 00:33:00.239 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, let's see some of these rules. I was having a peek as people were putting them in. I think there are so many things that you can see where where conflict can come in right? So we first have Lee's. One must never rise above their station life. You can really see how much people are going to. I'm assuming kind of push back against that, and how there's going to be conflict based on what's happening there. 98 00:33:00.993 --> 00:33:02.320 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: We had. 99 00:33:02.631 --> 00:33:26.170 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Let's see, trade is constrained by guilds and mafias and berries again. That's going to be, you know, a source of, I assume conflict as people are trying to get around, that it's going to put out sized amounts of power into the hands of Guild guilds and Mafias, Francis says, don't ask questions. Those who question disappear right? So you can see there's a that kind of level of secrecy that's being built into that world. 100 00:33:26.170 --> 00:33:34.460 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Social levels do not mix. Those perceived to be troublemakers disappears. So you can see already there's kind of this authoritarian regime here 101 00:33:34.540 --> 00:33:42.431 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: that that I assume the protagonists are going to be fighting against, or fighting or fighting to uphold in in some way or another. 102 00:33:42.760 --> 00:34:06.179 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: let's see what else we've got. Magic is tied to the energy you can put into it from Johanna. So you could see for that that, you know if a character is tired or sick or injured. Perhaps they're going to struggle with putting, you know, putting magic into the world right? So there's a lot of kind of difficulties that you could the characters could encompass by by that. So thinking of kind of things. 103 00:34:06.650 --> 00:34:22.050 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: thinking about your world in terms of the rules that govern. It is a really great way to start to think about. How can I make things more complicated? Where is there inherent conflict between my characters. You know. I think there's a lot of again. Kind of returning to the example of Harry Potter. 104 00:34:22.050 --> 00:34:44.115 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Part of the antagonism between Harry and Draco is because of that historical bad blood between Gryffindor and slytherin right, and doesn't really necessarily have a reason. But there is that kind of that rule that there's that conflict between those 2 houses. And so it creates this antagonism between the between the characters that serves to create conflicts that's later expanded upon within the narrative. 105 00:34:44.510 --> 00:34:52.890 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: so you can see kind of how building rules isn't just helpful for contextualizing the world, but also thinking about how to add depth to the conflict of your story. 106 00:34:53.422 --> 00:35:22.680 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, our next prompt is fun. One so in this one, you're going to brainstorm a list of 3 to 5 swear words or other phrases that characters in your world use. So you can think about celebratory phrases. You can think about angry phrases, frustrated phrases, you know, in the most recent dune movie, you know, they had the line, you know, made thy knife chip and shatter right. There's kind of these like phrases that that have the characters, you know. 107 00:35:22.680 --> 00:35:29.357 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Kind of think about the world feeling real right? 7 hells in in game of thrones. 108 00:35:29.770 --> 00:35:50.633 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: You know Merlin's beard is something that the characters say in Harry Potter again, kind of all of these phrases that the characters say, in place of things that we say in our world, this is going to add that layer of text, that makes people really feel like they are as readers dipping into somewhere different. Okay. So 5 quick. 5 quick 109 00:35:51.670 --> 00:35:59.660 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: minutes to go through this, and then you can put in the chat your ideas and sorry about the misspelled 110 00:36:00.220 --> 00:36:01.650 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: misspelled 111 00:36:01.680 --> 00:36:16.880 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: email there, Casey, I was trying to do. Give this presentation, Walt, also, giving access to people who had issues so 5 min to brainstorm, a list of 3 to 5 square words, phrases, celebratory phrases, etc, that you can add, let's go. 112 00:40:38.840 --> 00:40:42.110 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: We have just about 30 s left on this prompt. 113 00:41:20.130 --> 00:41:23.550 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, let's see some of these 114 00:41:24.140 --> 00:41:46.150 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: curse words and phrases we had. We had some really fun ones. So Dennis has compad so like for today's phones, a bit more sci-fi, which totally fine. I love Katherine to suck my pickle, which is very fun to the forest with you, which means certain death from Joseph. Is your brain infused with quizzan? Very nice? 115 00:41:46.700 --> 00:41:56.580 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: worst curse! Blast and blasted blazes. You've got a wizard's own luck for the sake of Ares flames. May your bond guide you. 116 00:41:56.610 --> 00:42:00.280 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: and still waters devils! Dwell! I like that Tasha 117 00:42:00.966 --> 00:42:09.689 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: for Kaya, for our creators. Mutts are slaying for hybrids or yeah muts. I'm assuming not mutes. By Jove, Dionysus. 118 00:42:11.790 --> 00:42:35.760 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: drizzly a derogatory term for a worship or term. But the bear spirits. Yes, there's so many great ones here, and I think this is again one of those kind of textual fun things that's really going to make the really going to make the world feel just more alive and more more engaging, right when characters are saying things that you wouldn't hear in day-to-day life. This is going to end up making the world feel 119 00:42:35.770 --> 00:43:00.630 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: feel real. And it's also something that just brings that into brings that into real life the same way, you know. May the force be with you, as yellowment shows, or you know, 7 hills or something that people say in real life, too. John has a great point here, you know. You can also increase this by doing things like coming up with slangs for different races and things like that, or different. You know, different houses or different guilds, etc. Whatever's kind of within 120 00:43:01.293 --> 00:43:07.660 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: within that world those can be identifying marks. So the same way again, if to return to 121 00:43:07.770 --> 00:43:30.530 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: a song and of ice and fire, the North remembers right. The the various houses have their have their have their phrases, right? Have their kind of sayings as well as their crests, etc. And it's that that thing that people can kind of identify with. And again, if you, you know, think forward into the future when your books are all best sellers and everybody's really engaged with them. It's it's the kind of thing of 122 00:43:30.530 --> 00:43:39.819 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: you know. People put posters on their wall with the houses they identify with, or the things that are signifiers of of the kind of characters and grouping. And so these kind of 123 00:43:40.484 --> 00:43:54.169 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: oh, yes, this winter is coming. Sorry. The North remembers as something else. But yes, winter is coming is a great example of that of like, you know, this is the the thesis statement of of house of house stark, so to speak. 124 00:43:54.170 --> 00:44:19.020 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay. Now, in prompt 4 we're going to describe the greatest and most feared warriors in your world's history. So notice here that we're talking about both greatest and most feared. So I want you to be thinking about protagonists and ag antagonists for this, and then also thinking about how they reflect into the current status quo so someone previously 125 00:44:19.490 --> 00:44:44.169 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: talked about they they had statues to. I think it was the 7 ancient gods, or something like that in in the world. So there's clearly that that tie in to ancient religion and ancient civilization within the world. But your worlds were all exist with history. Right? And I think again, Westros is a really great example of this, where the history and the the fights between the Targarians and the Starks and the Lanisters, etc. 126 00:44:44.290 --> 00:44:48.589 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: play out. Then, again, in real life, those those historical 127 00:44:49.110 --> 00:44:58.409 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: those historical figures, and what they have done have real consequences on what's happening in real in the real world. It's the same thing again in Harry Potter, where 128 00:44:58.510 --> 00:45:05.149 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: the the the but the battles that you know Dumbledore had previously, you know, are 129 00:45:05.150 --> 00:45:30.140 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: coming into coming to the fruition in the New World right in the world. The present tense of the the text. So, thinking through again, kind of the history of the world, they could be inspiration for your main character. So maybe that's who your main character wants to be. If they're a villain, perhaps they've contributed to the status quo of your world and the present text of your story. So they've contributed to why your world is the way it is. So. If there are rules like, you know, class systems are 130 00:45:30.140 --> 00:45:50.529 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: extremely segregated. This could be, why, right? So thinking through these these feared warriors, these fe, they don't necessarily have to be warriors, but political figures, key kind of influential figures in history, and how they either directly influence the present text and your present characters, or how they might indirectly so, 5 min to brainstorm on this as well. 131 00:45:51.950 --> 00:45:53.090 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: beginning now 132 00:47:30.770 --> 00:47:55.569 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: and just quickly Vica was saying that her world doesn't have warriors, which is totally fine. It doesn't have to be warriors. I think it's more thinking about like who are the most influential figures in the history, whether that's fighters who a lot of fantasy, you know, centers around war. So whether that's fighters who have created things. In recent, that the world is how it is or if that is, you know, as I said, political figures, if it's 133 00:47:55.570 --> 00:48:14.639 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: gods, if it's again you know, people who founded the world in some way, politicians, etc. Just kings, queens, etc. Basically, people who are going to. Yeah. Just think about kind of how they've contributed to. Why, the world is the way it is right now, and those struggles that your characters are facing. 134 00:50:49.420 --> 00:51:11.269 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Alright. We are just about out of time on this one. So there's some really cool stories coming in here. I think someone said, that you're now pantsing a new book. So sorry, and you're welcome for the inspiration. I love world building because it's just, you know, you can come up with so many stories, whether that's within your your world as it is, or in a different one. Alright. So let's see some of these. 135 00:51:11.933 --> 00:51:37.740 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: So Joseph has the founder of alchemy, the mother of all, discovered the cuisin inside of her crops. After the death of her firstborn son, she invented the way to Puri, purify food, and then developed the other branches of alchemy so clearly a really important person to the magic system. Tyran that a great disruptor ventured into the forest and harvested the first trees, causing the rebellion of the land right? So that's very clear where some of that conflict is coming from. 136 00:51:39.390 --> 00:51:48.449 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Tasha has an evil, immortal witch trapped in a tree by a spell a long time ago, threatening. She's coming back and bringing devastation onto the world. 137 00:51:48.600 --> 00:51:49.953 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Amy has. 138 00:51:50.920 --> 00:51:51.840 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: I, 139 00:51:52.020 --> 00:52:03.309 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: captains of, you know, of of specific kind of factions. It seems planetary pirates, the Earth engineers, and then a kind of guilds that were the warriors and keepers of the kingdom. 140 00:52:03.430 --> 00:52:10.289 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Pam. Has Eliana the Blade, a fierce warrior, known for her skill with a sword, who fought in countless battles? 141 00:52:10.400 --> 00:52:11.470 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: I'm 142 00:52:12.220 --> 00:52:37.569 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Vanessa has the most admire heroes nicknamed the Saviors, the first human who, in a time when her manity was fighting as decisive battle for their survival, made contact with the spirit, and turned the tie, or made the first contract with spirit and turn the tide of the battle. So this kind of created that partnership between human and spirits. So I imagine, in the future, in the present text of Vanessa's book, if there's conflict between human and spirits, they might be thinking back to that initial initial contract. 143 00:52:37.826 --> 00:52:46.553 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Megan has the last queen who is more murdered in a coup. I can imagine that that's creating kind of this instability. So I think this is a nice way to think about how 144 00:52:47.110 --> 00:53:13.799 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: again. All of the all of the characters that came before your existing characters, even though they're not present on the text. Literally, they still are informing they might be mentioned in passing, or they could just inform. Yeah, they could inform the the actions of those characters. And they could inform, you know who they aspire to or who they aspire to stay away from. You know the the legacies that they're fighting against all of that stuff. 145 00:53:14.120 --> 00:53:23.449 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, we have one more longer prompts to finish our final prompt for today. And you will get these slides. So you will be able to return to these. 146 00:53:23.850 --> 00:53:31.789 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: the fifth is to think about an origin story for your world. Now, this does not have to be a literal origin story, but 147 00:53:31.790 --> 00:53:56.739 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: in every world. You also want to think about the you know, kind of mythology, right? So within our world, all of the various religions have mythologies about how our world and the creatures in it came to be you can choose to write a more scientific story, so you can write the literal story of how your world came into being, or you can go with a more mythological story about. You know how a various group within your 148 00:53:56.740 --> 00:53:57.295 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: or 149 00:53:57.910 --> 00:54:22.840 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: within your world thinks about how the world came into being. And don't worry if you're writing sci-fi, that's totally fine it this applies to sci-fi as well. We will have a sci-fi week later this year, so we will specifically be talking about sci-fi. But for today it's totally fine to do fantasy or sci-fi. But the purposes of this prompt again, is to think about how your world and all of the creatures in it came to be again. You can think about doing something more scientific, so literally how the world 150 00:54:22.840 --> 00:54:47.700 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: came into being. Or you can think about a more mythological story. So a story about you know how the various kind of the mythology like, did the gods bring things into the world? Or and you know, do they have that kind of power? It could also be for a specific part of your world. So not the world, you know, as the planet in general, but it could also be thinking about. You know, how how did magic come into the world? Or 151 00:54:47.700 --> 00:54:48.800 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: how did 152 00:54:49.450 --> 00:54:56.220 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: you know? How did? How did commerce? I think somebody was talking previously about how you know the various 153 00:54:56.581 --> 00:55:02.920 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: organizations control commerce and trade. How did that happen? Right? So just thinking about an origin story? So we'll have 154 00:55:02.930 --> 00:55:11.260 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: 10 min for this. We won't have time to go through too many, but we'll have 10 min and then put them into the chat. Let's begin 155 01:04:57.890 --> 01:05:00.229 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: alright. We have about 20 more seconds. 156 01:05:18.100 --> 01:05:45.400 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: Okay, that is time. Thank you all so much for participating this. We are over time. So we're not going to be able to go through so many of them, but I have given Michelle the the slides, so she's going to put those up so that you can return to the prompts. And then I'm also saving the chat here. So that we can add the chat to the hub as well. So you can see all of the amazing things that people have come up with, because there's some really great. 157 01:05:45.640 --> 01:05:53.020 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: really great text here, and you should all be really proud of yourselves. And hopefully, this has helped you think about all of the various ways. 158 01:05:53.489 --> 01:05:58.520 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: That you can really think about expanding and making your world, you know more. 159 01:05:58.930 --> 01:06:00.040 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: more in-depth. 160 01:06:00.210 --> 01:06:05.030 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: all right, so let me just make sure I've got the chat saved. 161 01:06:05.820 --> 01:06:23.129 Hayley @ ProWritingAid: And yes, I do. Thank you all again so much. We will see you in just under an hour for our next premium day session. And all of the sessions today will be on the webinar link, except for the networking event which will be on that that link. So see you all later. Bye, thank you all so much.
